llms.txt is a proposed standard (llmstxt.org): a small markdown file that names your project, summarizes it and links to the pages that matter.
Add your project name and a one-sentence summary. This is the part most likely to be quoted back.
Add sections such as Docs, Product or Pricing and link only to final, canonical URLs with a short description.
Place the file at your domain root and update it whenever you restructure pages or rename plans.
The format is plain markdown, so it is easy to write by hand and easy for any model to read.
The blockquote under the heading should read in one breath. Treat it like a meta description you actually care about.
Skip tag archives, UTM-tagged URLs and redirected paths. Every link should resolve directly to the page you want cited.
Links an LLM could safely skip, such as terms pages, changelogs and deep references, belong under a section named Optional.
Adoption is uneven. No major search engine or AI provider has confirmed llms.txt as a ranking or citation signal, though some AI tools and agents can read it. It is cheap to add, but do not expect it to replace good content and clear site structure.
